The flow of air through your engine is basically controlled by a sequence of mechanisms that are determined by either a timing belt or timing chain, but what is the actual difference between these chains?
Timing belts were introduced to raise the effectiveness of engines and decrease noise. It contains of steel wire non-breakable rubber that has cogs semi-cylinder teeth that fit in the corresponding groove of the camshaft and timing pulleys as well. The rubber belts could logically flex around the pulleys as it rotates and the rubber to metal contact needs no lubrication system. Torque is basically transferred by the cogs to remove slippage and reduce friction. Timing belts are also very proficient at power transmission - up to 90%. Their main downfall is long life.
