Timing Belt Vs Timing Chain

The flow of air through your engine is basically controlled by a sequence of mechanisms that are determined by either a timing belt or timing chain, but what is the actual difference between these chains?

Timing Belt:

Timing belts were introduced to raise the effectiveness of engines and decrease noise. It contains of steel wire non-breakable rubber that has cogs semi-cylinder teeth that fit in the corresponding groove of the camshaft and timing pulleys as well. The rubber belts could logically flex around the pulleys as it rotates and the rubber to metal contact needs no lubrication system. Torque is basically transferred by the cogs to remove slippage and reduce friction. Timing belts are also very proficient at power transmission - up to 90%. Their main downfall is long life.

Timing Chain:

Timing chains were used completely throughout the untimely ages of the automotive industry in order to their ruggedness, durability and simplicity Most timing chains are generally roller chains have made out of steel, similar to the kind you will find in a bicycle or motorcycle. Steel's hardness, modulus and tensile strength of softness create it a perfect fabric for a long lasting timing drive system in an engine.
